Inorganic Chemistry

As one of the most prominent inorganic chemistry programs in Taiwan, this division focuses on research in optoelectronic, thermoelectric, and inorganic nanomaterials, as well as organometallic and bioinorganic chemistry. It provides high-quality education and professional training at both undergraduate and graduate levels, making it an ideal choice for students pursuing careers in academia or in high-tech industries.

The inorganic chemistry research programs in our department are diverse, closely interconnected, and highly complementary, collectively forming a comprehensive research landscape spanning molecular catalysis, materials chemistry, and energy conversion.

Organic Chemistry

Organic chemistry plays a central role in modern scientific research, with its powerful capacity to understand and construct molecules that contribute to human well-being. The Organic Chemistry Division encompasses a broad range of cutting-edge research areas, including supramolecular chemistry, small-molecule drug discovery, chemical biology, carbohydrate chemistry, the design and synthesis of organic materials, continuous-flow synthesis, catalytic method development, and natural product synthesis. These research programs provide an exciting platform for students to explore the frontiers of advanced science and have generated a significant impact across both academia and industry.

The Organic Chemistry Division at the Department of Applied Chemistry, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, encompasses a vibrant research community focused on advancing the frontiers of modern organic chemistry. Our faculty pursue cutting-edge research spanning synthetic methodology, functional molecule design, reaction innovation, and interdisciplinary applications in biology, materials science, and chemical engineering. Through synergistic efforts, our group contributes both fundamental insights and practical tools for the synthesis and functional exploitation of complex organic molecules.

Physical Chemistry

The Physical Chemistry Division of the Department of Applied Chemistry at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University continues to stand out as one of the leading centers for molecular sciences in Asia, combining advanced experimental techniques with modern computational approaches. The division provides a vibrant and interdisciplinary environment where students and researchers explore fundamental molecular phenomena spanning femtosecond photophysics, reaction kinetics/dynamics, nanoscale materials science, and spectroscopy of free radicals and biomolecules. Through close integration of experiment and theory, the division advances both foundational chemical knowledge and cutting-edge applications in sustainable energy, optoelectronics, and biomedicine. Current research within the Physical Chemistry Division is organized around the following interconnected themes.

Polymer Chemistry

Polymer science at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) has established a strong and distinctive profile through the integrated advancement of molecular design, precision synthesis, and functional materials. Currently, five faculty members are actively engaged in polymer research spanning the major domains of polymer science, with a balanced emphasis on fundamental understanding and application-driven innovation. A central research focus lies in conjugated and functional polymers, encompassing controlled synthesis, property modulation, and systematic structure–performance relationship studies to enable high-performance materials for optoelectronics, energy conversion, stimuli-responsive soft matter, flexible, stretchable, and self-healable devices, as well as sustainable technologies. In parallel, polymer research at NYCU extends into nanoscience and nanotechnology, where polymeric nanomaterials with well-defined morphologies and functionalities are engineered through templating and self-assembly strategies, supporting diverse applications in nanodevices and emerging technologies.

Analytical Chemistry

The Analytical Chemistry Division in the Department of Applied Chemistry (NYCU) is one of the leading analytical chemistry settings in Southeast Asia. This has mainly been due to the efforts made by the senior group leaders: Prof. Yu-Chie Chen, Prof. Hsin-Yun Hsu, and Prof. Yang-Hsiang Chan. Their research activities span from the development of novel analytical techniques for nanotechnology to mass spectrometric and separation science-related methodologies targeting important problems in chemical analysis.

Bio-tech

The biotechnology division explores and solves problems in living systems by combining chemical and biological strategies, and to investigate biochemical reactions such as enzymatic catalysis. The research topics focus on the development of new bioanalytical technologies, taking advantages of molecular spectra, mass spectrometry and imaging to analyze cellular components and tissues (important biological macromolecules such as proteins, nucleic acids…etc.). Additionally, in the biomedicine aspect, expression of enzymes and other proteins, the development of new recognition/binding molecules, the biosensors, high-throughput screening technologies, design of drugs, nano-probes, drug carriers, and biocompatible materials are also included.

Green Chemistry

Green Chemistry has evolved in response to several environmental issues in the second half of the last century, mostly due to the almost freely expanding chemical, petrochemical, and pharmaceutical industries. During the past two decades Green Chemistry grew rapidly and we can now consider this area as a mature and powerful field. Tremendous development has taken place in many important areas including renewable energy and resources, reaction environments, catalysis, synthesis, chemical biology, green materials, in situ monitoring and facile recycling. The combination of Green Chemistry with engineering, biology, toxicology, and physics will lead to novel interdisciplinary systems, which can now lift Green Chemistry to the next, advanced level.

Materials Chemistry

Materials chemistry is a new and highly interdisciplinary science that involves the use of chemistry for the creation, characterization, and application of materials with interesting or potentially useful physical or chemical characteristics. Substances of interest include inorganic, organic, polymeric, and hybrid materials, and thus materials chemistry incorporates solid-state chemistry, nanoscience, and polymer chemistry. Materials chemistry is central to the development of new technology and the global economy. As we look back, synthetic materials have played a vital role in improving the standard of living and the quality of human life worldwide. Looking forward, materials chemistry will continue to be essential for solving the greatest challenges of our time, from sustainable energy storage and environmental challenges to the development of quantum devices and quantum communication technology.
