Abstract Silicon photonics has enabled chip-scale devices capable of delivering free-space beams for the detection and manipulation of external objects. Key applications include LiDAR, free-space optical communication (FSO), microscopy, and trapped-ion quantum computing. In the first part of this talk, I will present beam shaping using metasurfaces monolithically integrated with silicon photonic integrated circuits. We experimentally demonstrate diffraction-limited beam focusing and holographic image projection above the silicon photonic chip. Our demonstrations span both the telecommunication wavelength range using the Si platform and the visible wavelength range using the SiN platform. In the second part, I will present two types of silicon photonic beam steerers developed at NYCU for different purposes. The first beam steerer is based on a metalens focal plane array (FPA) and thermo-optic prisms, producing a steerable collimated beam for LiDAR and FSO systems. It features high beam quality, compact footprint, and robust calibration, achieving continuous steering over a large field of view (FOV) of 62° and an average sidelobe suppression ratio of 19 dB. The second beam steer is an 8 8 silicon photonic optical phased array (OPA), producing a focused beam that can be steered throughout a 3D volume. It achieves a lateral FOV of 40 μm 40 μm and a focal length steerable from 250 µm to 450 µm, enabling miniaturized laser-scanning microscopy at chip scale.
