The joint student symposium between the Department of Applied Chemistry at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) and the Department of Chemistry at Gakushuin University was established in 2015. Since its inception, the symposium has become an important event in the academic journeys of graduate students from both universities. It also provides an excellent opportunity for young faculty members from both institutions to exchange ideas and gain insights into each other’s research interests and achievements.
With the financial support of the Department of Applied Chemistry at NYCU and the Department of Chemistry at Gakushuin University, the symposium has continued to be held successfully over the years. The 8th NYCU–Gakushuin University Joint Student Symposium was held on October 30–31, 2025, at Gakushuin University in Japan.
Since 2012, the Department of Applied Chemistry has organized the International Summer Course annually during the summer. Distinguished Chair Professor Hiroshi Masuhara has leveraged his extensive international academic network to systematically invite renowned scholars from around the world to deliver lectures. Each year, the course features a different theme focusing on emerging materials and advanced technologies. Topics have included quantum particles, metal oxides, DNA, nanoparticles, nanostructures, artificial photosynthesis, advanced imaging techniques, biosensing, and calcium minerals.
In recent years, a total of 17 professors from the United States, Japan, Germany, Canada, and Australia have been invited to give lectures. Students from Japan have also been selected to participate in the program, providing opportunities for them to engage in academic discussions, exchange ideas, and build professional networks with Taiwanese students. Through these international interactions, the course aims to help young researchers establish global academic connections early in their careers and develop a broader international perspective.
Professor Hsueh-Ju Liu is responsible for inviting professors from Japan to deliver lectures covering fundamental knowledge and the latest research developments in chemistry, physics, materials science, engineering, and biology. The course aims to enhance students’ professional knowledge, broaden their academic perspectives, and strengthen their foreign language proficiency.
Several faculty members from the Department of Applied Chemistry are actively involved in the Center for Emergent Functional Matter Science. Their research has achieved significant breakthroughs in the development of green energy materials and flexible devices, smart biomedical sensing technologies, and innovative intelligent devices. These outstanding research achievements have not only been published in prestigious international journals but have also fostered extensive collaborations with renowned research teams both in Taiwan and abroad.
